Today’s K League 1 News Roundup (September 28)

Seoul run away as Final A race tightens

As K League 1 takes a breather for the international break, FC Seoul’s dominance continues. With three regular-season rounds left, Seoul have 62 points, 15 clear of second-place Ulsan HD (47). Foreign striker Klimala leads the way, backed by key players such as Jung Seung-won, Yazan and Koo Sung-yun. The race for Final A (the top six), however, is wide open: only six points separate fourth-place Jeonbuk Hyundai (44), sixth-place Daejeon Hana Citizen (40) and ninth-place FC Anyang (38). When the league resumes after the Asian Games and international matches, all three Round 31 fixtures on October 9 are clashes between teams chasing Final A. Many clubs’ fates may not be decided until Round 33 on October 24.

Ulsan’s Lee Dong-gyeong scores for Korea too

Ulsan HD’s Lee Dong-gyeong showed his sharp finishing on the national team stage as well. In a friendly against Ecuador at Suwon World Cup Stadium on the 24th, with Korea up 2-0 in the 41st minute of the second half, he took a forward pass from Kim Bong-su (Daejeon Hana Citizen) and fired a low left-footed shot to seal a 3-0 win. This season he has 11 goals and 10 assists in 29 K League 1 matches. After 13 goals and 12 assists last season, he has become the first domestic player in K League history to reach double digits in both goals and assists in two straight seasons. Interim coach Robert Moreno listed him as a forward. “When I first joined the camp, the coach told me in a meeting that I’d play as a second striker. It’s a role I’ve played for my club too,” Lee said.

Gangwon’s Lee Ki-hyuk leads Korea at Asian Games

Gangwon FC’s Lee Ki-hyuk is captaining Korea’s men’s football team (U-23) at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. Starting as a defensive midfielder in the 2-0 Group D win over Saudi Arabia, he went down in a first-half challenge and complained of pain but still played the full 90 minutes. “If my focus slips in the middle, the whole team can be shaken,” he said afterward. “Now it’s a real knockout tournament. One slip and there’s no second chance.” Korea beat Vietnam 4-0 in the quarterfinals on the 25th and will face China for a place in the final on the 30th at 3 p.m. at Nagai Stadium in Osaka. Champions at three straight Games since Incheon 2014, Korea are chasing a first-ever fourth consecutive gold.
