Ortiz’s first MLB hit

Washington Nationals prospect Abimelec Ortiz made his big-league debut and recorded his first MLB hit in the July 12 game against the New York Yankees. He started as the designated hitter and went 1-for-2, opening the fourth with a double into center and advancing to third — a memorable first-day moment after his call-up. Ortiz was part of the MacKenzie Gore trade from Texas and had been producing in Triple-A Rochester before being optioned back after the game.
