Gangwon FC extends coach Jung Kyung-ho through 2027
Gangwon FC announced on September 7 that it has extended head coach Jung Kyung-ho’s contract through 2027 in recognition of his leadership. Since taking charge in 2025, Jung has lifted the club to as high as 5th in K League 1 and led it to the club’s second-ever Korea Cup semifinal. In his first Asian Champions League Elite campaign, Gangwon advanced to the round of 16, winning over fans. This season the club is enjoying a steady campaign, sitting 4th in K League 1 and reaching the Korea Cup quarterfinals. A Gangwon native from Samcheok, Jung joined the club as a founding member in 2009, served as captain the following year, and returned as assistant coach in 2023 before taking the helm. “I put my affection for and sense of responsibility toward my hometown club and its fans first,” he said.

Jeonbuk’s Lee Seung-woo scores and assists in 2 minutes
Jeonbuk Hyundai’s Lee Seung-woo scored the opener in the 59th minute and set up Tiago’s goal two minutes later to lead his team to a 2-0 win over Pohang Steelers in a K League 1 Round 27 home match on September 5. Though Jeonbuk’s title hopes have faded, the club still sits in second place behind league leaders Seoul, and Lee has been central to that. Used mainly as a substitute early in the season, he now leads the team in both goals and combined goal contributions with 8 goals and 3 assists, doing so efficiently while averaging 66 minutes per match across 26 appearances. He also scored a long-range opener against Incheon on August 30, continuing his role as Jeonbuk’s go-to problem solver.

Seoul’s Kim Gi-dong shares Song Min-gyu tale
FC Seoul manager Kim Gi-dong, ahead of a September 5 home match against Incheon, shared a lighthearted story about former player Song Min-gyu, who recently transferred to Europe. Kim said that when Song’s new club manager was fired right after the move, “the players all knew about it through their group chat,” adding with a laugh that they joked to Song, “You’re not even registered yet — just come back,” to which Song replied he had no idea what he was supposed to do. Seoul, including that match, extended its winning streak to four games, holding a commanding lead atop the table with 56 points, 16 clear of second-place Ulsan. Kim also voiced confidence in forward Klimala, who had shown frustration after missing scoring chances, saying, “There were a few times teammates could have easily set him up for a goal but didn’t.”

AFC club competitions bring new schedule test
Having endured a brutal summer heat wave, K League 1 clubs now face a new challenge as AFC club competitions begin this month. Jeonbuk Hyundai, Daejeon Hana Citizen, and Pohang Steelers will compete in the Champions League Elite (kicking off September 15), while FC Seoul and Gangwon FC enter the second-tier ACL2 (starting September 16). With the race for league positions intensifying just as midweek continental away trips pile up, squad fitness management has emerged as a new deciding factor. Daejeon faces a grueling trip to Johor, Malaysia, while Seoul must travel to Melbourne, Australia — both demanding journeys. League-leading Seoul manager Kim Gi-dong called September “one of the biggest hurdles on the way to the title” and outlined plans to rotate his squad between competitions.
