I visited Angel Stadium in Anaheim while on a business trip to the U.S.

It’s the home of the LA Angels, and only after hearing it was a 10-minute drive from Disneyland did I understand why this stadium is always on benchmarking lists.

Angel Stadium — A 1998 Disney Renovation

Angel Stadium is a venue with about 45,000 seats that opened in 1966. Although it’s an old ballpark, it didn’t feel particularly aged, and the reason was a major renovation carried out in 1998.

At the time the club owner was Disney, so Disney’s Imagineering team handled the renovation directly. The result is the artificial rock formation in the outfield called the California Spectacular.

They combined waterfalls, fountains, and geysers, and fireworks shoot up from that rock formation at the start of the game, whenever the Angels hit a home run, and at moments of victory. It felt like a small amusement ride planted inside the ballpark.

Star Wars Week — Disney Collaborations Every Season

The connection with Disney didn’t end with the facilities. The day I went happened to be Star Wars Week, and Star Wars characters appeared on every scoreboard and even the player intro screens were themed.

Since Disneyland is only about 8 km away by car, joint promotions featuring Disney movies and characters naturally run each season. It was obvious this is a strategy to attract children and family groups.

QR Codes and the Smile Fan Cam — Details That Drive Participation

QR codes plastered around the stadium also caught my eye. Almost all information — game details, tickets, F&B menus, and facility guidance — was connected through a single QR code, and the scoreboard continuously ran a smile fan-cam event that encouraged audience participation by showing the crowd.

Even without big-budget events, I got the impression that there are dense mechanisms giving spectators a constant sense of participation. What I ultimately saw at Angel Stadium was that an old ballpark can become a completely different space if it meets the right content partner.

Closing Thoughts — What a Content Partner Can Change

Many domestic stadiums don’t have a theme park or content partner of this scale nearby, but you don’t necessarily need a giant IP like Disney — collaborating seasonally with local content or characters is worth considering.

The older the stadium, the more a renovation story like this can become a major asset.
