Today’s K League 1 News Roundup (September 10)

Four named for August player award

The K League announced the four finalists for its August EA SPORTS Player of the Month award on the 10th: Galego of Bucheon FC 1995 (3 goals, 2 assists), Rubiksson of Daejeon Hana Citizen (3 goals, 2 assists), Lee Dong-gyeong of Ulsan HD (2 goals, 3 assists), and Jeong Seung-won of FC Seoul (3 goals, 3 assists). Jeong is chasing back-to-back monthly awards after winning in July, having powered Seoul’s hold on first place. Fan voting runs from the 10th through the 13th on the league’s official app, to be combined with a technical study group panel’s vote for the final result.

Gangwon extends coach Jeong’s deal

Gangwon FC announced a contract extension for manager Jeong Kyung-ho through 2027. Since taking over last year, Jeong has lifted the club to fifth in K League 1 and led it to a club-record second Korea Cup semifinal, while also reaching the round of 16 in Gangwon’s first-ever AFC Champions League Elite campaign. This season the team sits fourth in the league and in the Korea Cup quarterfinals. Jeong, a Gangwon native and founding member of the club as a player, said he “thought first of my affection and responsibility toward my hometown club” in agreeing to stay.

Mugosa eyes his Ulsan hoodoo

Incheon United’s Mugosa is heating up again after a summer slump. He scored his 11th goal of the season on the 8th against Bucheon FC to spark a 2-1 comeback win, and now has his sights on Ulsan HD, a team he has tormented with 14 goals in 14 career meetings — a goal a game. After managing just 3 goals over 10 games in the heat of July and August, down from 7 in his first 12, he has rediscovered his scoring touch as the weather cools. Incheon travels to face second-place Ulsan on the 12th, hoping their in-form striker can again deliver against his favorite opponent as the team fights for a Final A spot.
