Photo of a children's ceremonial first pitch event during a fan-less game in the COVID-19 era

I share my experiences and impressions from 15 years working as a marketer for professional sports teams.

In 2020, as the world struggled through COVID-19, nearly every professional sport on the planet staged something unprecedented: games played to empty stands. The photo below is from a ceremonial first pitch before a Korean professional baseball game — a moment that struck a chord in the era of social distancing. A child inside a large inflatable ball rolled the ball toward the plate and walked all the way from the mound to the catcher, still inside the ball, before touching hands with him. The image ran on front pages across the country the next day.
The stadium itself was empty, but the ribbon boards and video screens showed fans cheering along from home over Zoom, and the game wrapped up with the same energy and fan support as any other.

Professional sports undeniably play a vital role: they bring fans together, unite people, blow away everyday stress, and sometimes even become a lifelong profession.

Sports have a way of igniting passion across race and borders. But I’ve watched plenty of foreign fans struggle just to find the right stadium in an unfamiliar city, buy a ticket, or track down somewhere decent to eat nearby — and I’ve run into the same headaches myself trying to catch a game abroad. That’s really why I built this site: in the hope that it makes things a little easier for people in the same boat.

Going forward, I’ll use the site’s “Marketer Insight” section to write about everything I’ve experienced and learned in professional sports and sports marketing — one post at a time, however long it takes.

Thanks for stopping by — I hope you’ll keep coming back.

Thank you.
