Today’s La Liga News Roundup (August 5)

Cancelo close to return

João Cancelo is in the final phase of returning to FC Barcelona: the Portuguese full‑back will sign a two‑year deal and the move, delayed by the need to reach an agreement with Al‑Hilal, could be completed in the coming days. The club may pay about.8 million and gains a versatile option for both flanks.

Riedel registered at Espanyol

Clemens Riedel, the German centre‑back who featured with the reserve squad last season, has been registered in LaLiga as a first‑team member of RCD Espanyol. He says he feels greater responsibility in the dressing room and recalled the pre‑season draws in England against Burnley (2‑2) and Middlesbrough (3‑3).

Odysseas registered

Odysseas Vlachodimos has been registered by Sevilla FC in LaLiga and says he is happy to return; he will compete for the goalkeeper spot with Fran González. The club, which has already completed signings such as Jon Guridi, Juan Iglesias and Arouna Sangante, remains active in the market and is targeting forwards and a defensive midfielder.

Camavinga: assist and competition

Eduardo Camavinga started in Real Madrid’s third pre‑season friendly and provided an assist for the opening goal; his role will now coincide with the arrival of Bernardo Silva and the gradual return of internationals. The midfielder will face increased competition for a midfield spot in the coming weeks.

Valladolid yet to register signings

Real Valladolid has announced nine additions for 2026‑27 (Balboa, Yeray, Van Duiven, De Rooij, Barberá, Víctor, Dani Pérez, Ojeda and Chacón), but LaLiga’s official page shows none of them registered yet. The side is preparing for the league opener, scheduled for August.15 at Son Moix against Mallorca.

Sporting unveils nine signings

Sporting de Gijón presented nine new signings to its supporters: Egoitz Arana, Jorge Sáenz, Emanuel Gularte, Aimar Duñabeitia, Nikita Iosifov, Alejo Sarco, Andrés Ferrari, Hugo Guillamón and Konrad de la Fuente. The club is building a competitive project with promotion in mind and still seeks a centre‑back and a forward to complete the squad.
